Ms. Natalie Lewis, Chief Operating Officer of Great Jobs KC (formerly known as the KC Scholars Organization), met with KC Scholarship recipients on February 20th to discuss their educational experiences at the University of Missouri. The students were able to attend open discussion sessions with Ms. Lewis throughout the morning, sharing their experiences on the MU campus and learning about more opportunities that their scholarship will provide. The opportunities discussed were monetary stipends for students participating in Undergraduate Research and the ability to join Study Abroad program that offer course credit at Mizzou.
The KC Scholars enjoyed a great morning learning about Ms. Lewis’s educational experiences, such as her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MBA from the University of Texas in Austing, and Studying Abroad in Manchester Business School in Manchester, England, and earned her Missouri Teaching Certification from Northwest Missouri State University. They also enjoyed the great food provided and getting to know each other.
In the afternoon, Dr. Jim Spain, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies and Professor in the Division of Animal Sciences, led tour of the MU Foremost Dairy research center. Ms. Lewis and the KC Scholars were joined on the tour by Dr. Thorn, Director of the Center for Academic Success & Excellence (CASE), and Ms. Ana-Maria Fernandez, a Student Success Coordinator in CASE. The group got to visit the maternity and newborn calves’ pens to experience the life cycle of a dairy cow. They were also able to work with a rumen fistulated cow (pictured below) to learn more about the digestive system of a mature dairy cow.
The tour also included seeing the milking operation and getting to milk a cow!
